in your home is 30x more toxic than the air outside?<br \/><br \/>Pretty shocking, right?<br \/><br \/>Toxic air pollutants include\u00a0<strong>benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and ammonia<\/strong>, when we spend too much time inside surrounded by these chemicals it can have adverse health effects such as headaches, dizziness, eye irritation and much more.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-medium col-1\" >\r\n<h2>What Is The NASA Clean Air Study?<\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-small col-1\" >The Clean Air Study was designed and conducted to\u00a0<strong>explore natural and effective ways to purify the air in small and unventilated spaces<\/strong>\u00a0such as space stations.<br \/><br \/>A decade prior to the study, more and more buildings were popping up around the world specifically designed to reduce natural airflow in a bid to save on electricity bills.<br \/><br \/>However, people living and working in these buildings started reporting irritations and strange symptoms, like rashes and drowsiness throughout the day.\u00a0<br \/>Experts concluded that fresh air was necessary to avoid these symptoms.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-medium col-1\" >\r\n<h2>Air Purifying Plants<\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-small col-1\" >The findings didn&#8217;t sit well with NASA.<br \/><br \/>Why?<br \/><br \/>Because space stations need to be\u00a0<strong>completely sealed<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/>There is no fresh air in space -so naturally they were worried what would happen to their astronauts who lived in these small spaces over prolonged period of time. \u00a0<br \/><br \/>Everyone knows that plants photosynthesise,\u00a0<strong>inhaling carbon dioxide to produce oxygen<\/strong>, but NASA thought that plants might be able to go one step further and actually\u00a0<strong>absorb dangerous pollutants<\/strong>\u00a0from the atmosphere.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>In the NASA houseplant study, they tested the effectiveness of various houseplants, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hedera_helix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English Ivy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spider_plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spider Plant\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chrysanthemum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chrysanthemum<\/a>, when faced with the following pollutants:<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Formaldehyde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0formaldehyde<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benzene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benzene<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xylene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">xylene<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ammonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ammonia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trichloroethylene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trichloroethylene<\/a>.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-medium col-1\" >\r\n<h2>What Are These Pollutants &amp; Why Are They Dangerous?<\/h2>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-small col-1\" >Most people don\u2019t know what any of these pollutants are, but they exist all around us.<br \/><br \/>Here\u2019s where you can find these toxins:\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Formaldehyde is found in tissues, napkins, paper bags, and synthetic fabrics, among other things.<br \/><br \/>Benzene is found in plastics, tobacco smoke, glue, paint, wax, dyes and detergents.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Trichloroethylene is found in paint, varnish, paint stripper, glues and inks.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Xylene is found in rubber, leather, printing and exhausts.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Ammonia is found in floor waxes and cleaners.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>And here are some of the symptoms that can occur when exposed to them in high doses.<br \/><br \/>Please note that the severe symptoms, like unconsciousness, comas and organ damage, only occur at very high exposure &#8211; much higher than typical day to day use of these products.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"text-block text-size-small col-1\" >Formaldehyde exposure can\u00a0<strong>irritate your throat<\/strong>, mouth and nose. If you are exposed to a significant amount, you could experience swelling of your larynx and lungs.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Benzene exposure can irritate your eyes and cause symptoms like dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, heart rate changes, and, in extreme cases, unconsciousness.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Trichloroethylene can cause euphoria, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, headaches, drowsiness and, in very severe cases, coma.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Ammonia can cause coughing, sore throat and irritation around your eyes.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>As mentioned, the more severe symptoms on this list would occur after exposure to a lot of the pollutant &#8211; much more than you would experience in general day to day use of, for example, general handling of paper tissues.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>However, the study suggest you might find that you feel more refreshed, awake, and experience fewer symptoms like eye and nose irritation and headaches if you strive to eliminate these toxins from your environment.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>In recent months, for obvious reasons, there has been an emphasis on creating a home which function as safe haven &#8211; a space that promotes and encourage optimum health.<br \/><br \/>Incorporating more plants in the home, not only as an\u00a0<strong>impact on our physical and mental health<\/strong>, but they look great too.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div \u2018fresh air\u2019 by producing oxygen.<br \/><br \/>They also increase humidity in the atmosphere as they release water vapour.<br \/><br \/>This can prevent dryness around the nose and mouth, which many people experience during cold winters or after too much time indoors.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>There are substantial mental benefits to having houseplants as well.<br \/><br \/>COVID has seen us spend more and more time in our house &#8211; for those who live in apartments; this has been especially difficult.<br \/><br \/>However, plants help us to bring nature inside.<br \/><br \/>They can boost our mood, remind us of nature\u2019s healing power, and\u00a0<strong>make us feel more grounded and centred<\/strong>.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>There have been many studies of plants positively affecting our mental health &#8211; one looked at the impact of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/01\/200102184829.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">putting small plants on employee\u2019s desks at an office in Japan<\/a>.<br \/><br \/>After four weeks, the study summarised that the staff members who had a houseplant on their desk had lower stress and anxiety
